Meet Shelley, BD/PPD

As a mama of 5 who had a wide variety of birth experiences, it's safe to say that pregnancy, birth, and postpartum have been a huge part of of Shelley’s life. Her passion for learning about these topics for her own benefit quickly turned into a mission to educate, advocate for, nurture and support people on their own paths to parenthood. She believes that every family (regardless of race, gender-identity or sexual orientation) deserves the compassionate care, attentiveness, and education that a doula provides. The way a family is treated during this time will stick with them forever; that's why she aims to do everything in her power to make sure her clients are able to look back on this period of their lives with joy, knowing they were informed of their options, as well as supported and respected in their decisions.

Q&A with Shelley

How do you introduce yourself?
”Hey!  I'm Shelley, the local doula!  I'm not the "chat about the weather" type.  I'm vulnerable and authentic by nature so I love to get real with people and make deep connections.”

What do you do for fun?
I'm a total foodie, so food = fun for me.  I'm always up for a snack.  I also love crocheting, podcasts/audiobooks, and many other sedentary hobbies.  I'm going to be really good at being "old.”

What inspires you?
”I am so inspired by the birth workers who came before me who have been doing this for 20+ years and have created change and opportunities for those like me who are following in their footsteps.  They worked hard and paved the way so doulas like me could make a living wage and have respect within our communities, and so birthing people know their rights and their options.  If I can make a fraction of the impact of those wise individuals who came before me I will feel that I succeeded in my career.”

What’s your favorite food?
”Fondue and pork carnitas!”

What’s one other thing you want people to know about you?
”No one forced me to do this job.  Over and over again I hear clients say "I wanted to text you about that but I didn't want to bother you."  My clients are NEVER "bugging" me.  Being a doula is my dream job, my passion, and I love to chat about all things pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.  Always contact me whenever you feel the urge.”
