HG & Cannabis

Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) and Cannabis

“Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease that may cause weight loss, malnutrition, and dehydration due to severe nausea and/or vomiting with potentially adverse consequences for the patient and the newborn.”

This is not your typical “morning sickness.”

How can cannabis help?

There is scientific evidence that supports that Cannabis can help with nausea.

“Cannabis works through different pathways that affect the nausea center in the brain.
It also works through indirect systems that address the underlying causes of nausea.

Different cannabinoids and terpenes in cannabis work together to address nausea.

THC (which is the psychoactive compound in cannabis) has the most direct effect on nausea.”

THC binds to CB1 receptors that are located in specific parts of the brain, like the medulla oblongata, that control nausea and the urge to vomit.

If you have concerns about your baby and THC, or getting drug tested, CBDA and CBD can be an alternative.

CBD can be effective in treating nausea , however, it is not as effective as the cannabinoid, THC.
CBD interacts with serotonin releasing receptors, and when given in relatively small doses has been shown to help alleviate both nausea and vomiting.

Lastly, studies have shown that CBDA has a larger therapeutic range than CBD and is more comparable to the effects on nausea as that of THC.

Note: Do not use a CBD isolate if you are pregnant.

The best ways to consume cannabis for HG

The quickest way to find relief is by using a smokable form of cannabis, such as joints, vapes, or vaporizers.
This delivers the most rapid relief since the cannabinoids hit the bloodstream minutes after you take it.

Other options of consuming cannabis are edibles or tinctures. While these are not as fast acting as the smokable form of cannabis the therapeutic effects after taking edibles or tinctures does last for a longer time.

The best strains for nausea need to have high amounts of THC and moderate amounts of CBDA and CBD.

Studies on cannabis and nausea

“In a recent study, titled “The Effectiveness of Common Cannabis Products for Treatment of Nausea” published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, researchers showed that the vast majority of patients using cannabis to treat nausea experience relief with more than 96% of the study sample reporting nausea relief within one hour.”
