At Momentous Doula Care, we're all about embracing the extraordinary – and that includes guiding expectant parents through the awe-inspiring journey of childbirth. So, buckle up as we take you through the thrilling steps of becoming a doula, unveil the ups and downs of this rollercoaster ride, and spill the beans on the personal sacrifices that make this adventure oh-so-unique.

Becoming A Doula: The Steps It Takes

Doula Discovery: Picture this — you're exploring the fascinating realms of childbirth, maternal health, and the incredible role of a doula. Dive into childbirth education classes, devour insightful books, and soak in workshops that'll have you shouting "Eureka!" at every corner. The world of birth work is an exciting discovery and can feel overwhelming in the beginning. We suggest joining local social media groups to get a feel for what doula work looks like in your community.

Doula Training: When you’ve decided you’re ready to take the leap, enroll in a reputable doula training program. There are many out there to choose from and it is always suggested to research the program in it’s entirety. Weigh the pros and cons of each course to help you make a better decision. Your course should cover topics about various topics from decoding childbirth secrets and nailing labor support techniques to being a postpartum pro and wielding the power of communication like a boss. Be sure to review any topics on diversity and inclusivity along with trauma-informed care. These subjects are extremely important in birth work and believe every doula course should educate on the subject.

Dive into Doula Work: Buckle up, because this phase is a whirlwind of learning, camaraderie, and baby steps toward being the ultimate doula superhero. Sharpen those skills, absorb wisdom like a sponge, and practice being the person your birthing parents will thank their lucky stars for. When you show up for yourself, doula work can be rewarding. It also means that you will now need to learn a whole new routine for mental health self-care. With the long births and the on-call schedule, you can easily find yourself burnt out. Prepare to take care of yourself.

Eureka at Every Birth: It's showtime! Get ready to witness the joy of birth up close. Finding births for your certification has shown to be difficult for some in the past. That’s why we recommend reaching out to the birth work community as you are working through your certification to get familiar with the other doulas in the area. It can be extremely helpful to familiarize yourself with the hospitals, OBGYNs and midwives in the areas you plan to service. We never suggest offering your services for free but always be transparent with your clients in sharing your experience as a doula.

Certification: Currently there are no requirements for doula certification to practice as a doula. Although, if you are wanting to work with Medicaid and get reimbursed for services in eligible states, you would be required to hold a certification. With that being said, we believe that education is essential in this work. Research is constantly changing involving birth and children. It is our job to stay up-to-date with these discoveries and to adapt our practices to support what is recommended.

Riding the Doula Wave: Pros and Cons of this Epic Journey

Pros:

Impact Infinity: Ever dreamt of making a difference that's etched in people's hearts forever? Doula life lets you be that difference during a life-altering experience. Every family is different when it comes to their needs for a doula. Your role may always look a bit different depending on who you are supporting and where they are in their stage of life.

Growth Galore: Forget comfort zones – you're diving headfirst into the sea of personal growth. Think empathy EXP boosts, active listening power-ups, and adaptability armor. Doulas are the divine messenger between client and physician. We have something about us that helps slow the moment and allow parents to make truly informed decisions. We take that skill into our personal lives as well.

Time Twist Magic: Traditional jobs got you down? As a doula, you'll be strutting to the beat of your own schedule. You may find that scheduling certain days of the week for prenatals / postpartum visits may work best. Many birth workers team up with other birth workers or agencies and share an on-call schedule, leaving a bit more freedom in their personal lives.

Connections in Technicolor: Get ready to build bonds that transcend time and space. Connecting with clients and witnessing the birth of new families is like watching your favorite movie – but better. It’s also deeply important to find other birth workers who you can confide in. Sometimes we need to debrief births we attend or may need help in our business. Making those connections are crucial in your success.

Cons:

Feeling Feels: Ready for a heartstring tug? The emotional intensity of doula work is real. Be prepared to wield your emotional armor and practice self-care like it's your superpower. Birth is transforming. We know that every birth story is different and we know that emergencies can happen. We want to remind you that you are human and you are allowed to have emotions. As doulas, we are so involved and connected with our clients that it seems impossible to not be emotionally effected by their journey.

The Birth Time Warp: Births laugh at schedules. Say goodbye to predictability and hello to being on call 24/7 – weekends, holidays, and whenever the stork decides to knock. Yes, of course you will have down time. (As long as you schedule that in for yourself.) Be prepared for long nights, middle of the night wake-up calls, and unexpected situations arising. Adapt and go. You’ve got this.

Income Inconsistencies: Need a steady paycheck? Doula income can sometimes play hide-and-seek. Budgeting skills, activate! It can be hard in the beginning. Doula work is very much word-of-mouth and marketing. Both of these take time and connection. Be patient with yourself and get creative in your ways of earning income. If you aren’t finding much success in finding clients right away, try offering classes, birth planning sessions, or even postpartum care.
